Copper

  • Capstone builds at half Agua Rica's price. Santo Domingo's $2.3bn for 106 kt a year in its first seven years is about $21,800 per annual tonne, against Agua Rica's $42,500. Mantoverde Optimizado, at $176M for ~20 kt, is $8,800.
  • What "double" needs. Capstone's two Chile mines made 157 kt in 2025. Santo Domingo's early rate plus the two Mantoverde projects (~20 kt and 3.5 kt) add about 130 kt on a 100% basis, reaching about 287 kt, or 1.8 times. A full double needs about 27 kt more than the named projects show.
  • Half the acid is now foreign. Chile imported 3.97 Mt of sulphuric acid in 2025 against 3.92 Mt made at home, a 50.3% import share. Spot acid at $500/t in late April was 2.6 times February's $190.

Critical minerals

  • Boss guides a slower, costlier rest of year. 1.25–1.30 Mlb for FY27 leaves 297–314 klb a quarter after Q1's 359 klb, 13–17% less. Q1 AISC of A$79/lb sits below the full-year A$83–92 guide.
  • Iluka's spend runs ahead of the build. A$1,237M is 69–73% of the A$1.7–1.8bn Eneabba budget, with the refinery 65% built. The quarter added A$136M and about 5 points of progress from A$1,101M and ~60% at June 30.
  • PLS made more than it sold. Record output of 267.6 kt against 223.6 kt sold leaves 44 kt, or 16% of the quarter's output, unsold.

Policy and trade

  • Tungsten is a China market. China mined 67 kt of 85 kt in 2025, 79% of world supply (USGS). Vietnam, second, mined 3 kt, about 3.5%.
  • So is most antimony. China and Russia mined 72 kt of 110 kt in 2025, about 65% of world supply (USGS).

Antamina halts operations after a worker dies at YanacanchaPerspective
The company ordered a precautionary safety stoppage on Oct 27 and opened an investigation. A source close to the company says there is no restart timetable. Antamina produced ~390,000t of copper in 2025 (down ~9% after an earlier fatality) and had recovered to 342,100t in Jan–Aug (+48.7% y/y). Owners are BHP and Glencore (33.75% each), Teck (22.5%) and Mitsubishi (10%). The halt hits one of the biggest concentrate sources in an already tight concentrate market. Peru / copper, zinc
Ore Daily PerspectiveAntamina's halt idles about 1.4 kt of copper a day

Antamina's copper output was up nearly half this year before Tuesday's stoppage. The mine supplied almost a fifth of Peru's copper in January to August. Output elsewhere in Peru fell.

What a day is worth

Antamina produced 342,104 t of copper from January to August, Peru's energy and mines ministry (MINEM) says. That is up 48.7% from a year earlier. It works out to about 1.41 kt a day, or 9.9 kt a week, by Ore Daily's calculation. At Tuesday's LME three-month price of $14,421.50/t, reported by Reuters, a day of that output holds about $20M of contained copper.

Teck's unchanged 2026 guidance implies a slower second half. Its 95–105 kt for a 22.5% share equals 422–467 kt for the whole mine. After Teck's reported 244.1 kt in the first half, on a 100% basis, that leaves 178–223 kt for July to December, by Ore Daily's calculation. That is 0.97–1.21 kt a day, against 1.35 kt a day in the first half.

Antamina monthly copper output from January 2024 to August 2026, from Peru's energy and mines ministry. Output fell to 20.7 thousand tonnes in April 2025, the month of an earlier fatal accident, and averaged 42.8 thousand tonnes a month from January to August 2026.Antamina monthly copper output from January 2024 to August 2026, from Peru's energy and mines ministry. Output fell to 20.7 thousand tonnes in April 2025, the month of an earlier fatal accident, and averaged 42.8 thousand tonnes a month from January to August 2026.

One mine carried Peru's growth

Antamina supplied 18.7% of Peru's mined copper in January to August, by Ore Daily's calculation from MINEM data. National output rose 1.2% to 1,829.8 kt. Without Antamina, Peru's output fell 5.7%, to 1,487.7 kt from 1,577.6 kt.

The mine's 2025 copper output fell 9% to 395,121 t, MINEM data show. Reuters linked that drop to an earlier fatal accident, while Teck cited less copper-only ore. In April 2025 a manager was killed at the site, and the mine began restarting two days later, Reuters reported. Teck said its Q2 2025 figures included an extended shutdown after the fatality. Antamina's 2025 tonnage equals about 1.7% of world mine output of 23.0 Mt, based on USGS estimates.

Ore mix also matters. Copper-only ore made up 67% of mill feed in Q2, up from 23% a year earlier, Teck said. Zinc output fell to 54.0 kt in Q2 from 142.0 kt.

The halt lands in a tight market for concentrate. Sucden Financial said on Tuesday that constrained concentrate supply is supporting prices. ING's Ewa Manthey said tight supply should keep a floor under copper.

What to watch

There is no restart date. A source close to the company told Reuters there is no timetable while the investigation runs.

Teck reports Q3 results and Glencore its Q3 production on Thursday, Oct. 29. Teck's figures will show whether its unchanged 2026 Antamina range still holds. MINEM's September bulletin will show the mine's pace in the month before the halt.

Capstone commits more than US$3bn in Chile over four years to double its copper output there by 2031
At least US$2.3bn goes to Santo Domingo (106,000t/yr Cu in its first seven years; 19-year life), plus US$220M for two Mantoverde growth projects, US$165M for mine development, US$150M sustaining and US$70M exploration. Mantoverde Optimizado lifts throughput to 45,000tpd from 32,000tpd and extends life to 25 years from 19. The pyrite project adds 3,500t/yr of cathode from early 2028. Orion is taking 25% of Santo Domingo; district cobalt potential is 4,500–6,000t/yr. President Kast called it "a sign of confidence in Chile" (our translation). Chile / copper, cobalt
Capstone builds at half Agua Rica's price. Santo Domingo's $2.3bn for 106 kt a year in its first seven years is about $21,800 per annual tonne, against Agua Rica's $42,500. Mantoverde Optimizado, at $176M for ~20 kt, is $8,800. Over its 19-year life Santo Domingo averages 68 kt a year, which lifts the cost to about $34,000 per annual tonne. Its by-product C1 of $0.28/lb in years 1–7 is about 4% of copper's $6.54/lb at LME's $14,421.50/t, carried by magnetite credits.

Chile now imports half its sulphuric acid, the highest dependence in 24 years (Cochilco analysis)
Domestic acid output fell 17.2% in 2025 to 3.92Mt, the lowest since 2002; imports were 3.97Mt. Smelters run at ~60% of capacity. Northern Chile spot acid rose from US$190/t in late February to US$500/t in late April. Cochilco sees copper-mining demand of 7.31Mt in 2026 and 7.94Mt in 2027, with a 2027 deficit above 4.0Mt if output stays at 2025 levels. This is an under-reported cost squeeze on SX-EW cathode output, made worse by China's acid export limits. Chile / copper
Half the acid is now foreign. Chile imported 3.97 Mt of sulphuric acid in 2025 against 3.92 Mt made at home, a 50.3% import share. Spot acid at $500/t in late April was 2.6 times February's $190. Cochilco's 7.94 Mt of 2027 copper-mining demand is 2.0 times Chile's 2025 acid output. That is where the 4 Mt-plus deficit comes from if domestic output stays flat.
